'She said I was acting like the courtyard is my kingdom': Woman voluntarily revitalizes her community’s neglected courtyard, is accused by jealous neighbor of “taking over” and making everyone else look lazy, demanding she redo the layout to her standards

There is simply no way this woman is trying to turn such a kind and caring gesture into something so negative! This young woman has put all her time and effort into bringing this shared neighborhood garden back to life…and not just for herself, but for their whole community to enjoy! A place that was once neglected is just starting to flourish again, all thanks to her…but it seems like some attention-craving neighbors are jealous of all the gratitude she's been receiving! So instead of hopping on the thank-you train, this neighbor has got something else to say!

Whilst sweeping away some weeds, this woman was confronted by her neighbor for her garden 'works', accusing her of making everyone else look lazy…Like what? So instead of picking up a white flag (and some soil) in an attempt to change that narrative, this neighbor wrote up a complaint letter addressed to the HOA, regarding this woman's garden makeover! Who in the world complains about someone who's trying to improve their environment with no strings attached? A jealous, bitter woman…that's who!

    I 23F live in a small community where we have a shared old courtyard. Last fall, I started fixing it up on my own time so I begone trimming bushes, repainting the old benches, picking up trash, planting some flowers.

  • Dimac99 NTA and I very much doubt you need to worry about Clara. Your other neighbours know what you've done and are grateful. They've told you as much. Clara is embarrassed she did nothing and jealous of how well the other neighbours speak of you. I'm willing to bet she speaks for no- one but herself. Anyway, as I understand it, if the HOA are on your side, you're golden. They would soon tell you if there was a problem.

  • jcocab What a nice thing to do - to spruce the place up. Question: was it trash removal, weeding, and returning benches to original look, or your new vision of what could be? Was it all black and white benches and flowers and now it's a rainbow fairy garden - or vica versa? Could you call a community meeting to hear ideas for what people including Clara, would like this space to reflect? It is okay to have different ideas and look for middle ground.. this is a courtyard so it is not like a choic

  • KLG999 Perhaps you need to copy Clara's letter and attach it to a letter you write to all residents and the HOA Explain your motives, that it was a labor of love that you felt was beneficial to the community. But since Clara feels the wider community is offended by your efforts and design, you will step aside and let them work on their own harmonious project You are absolutely NTA.

I would alert the neighbours that there's been a new volunteer who is willing to take up the care of the courtyard and give the neighbours name, and send them copies of her letter. Then be busy for the next month. I mean, christmas holidays are a super busy time for everyone....
